The Health Benefits of Gratitude

Today’s health hack is all about the positive health benefits associated with gratitude towards a good God.

Psalms 118:1 Give thanks to the Lord for He is good and his love endures forever.

Theologically speaking, in terms of our relationship with God and how we see Him, this verse is so good. When you know that God is good, when you know his love and see that it endures for you over all of your life and circumstances, his love doesn’t wane, his goodness doesn’t dissipate… you can live thankfully knowing that as James 1:17 says “every good and perfect gift comes down from above, from the Father of lights, in whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”

When you are convinced of God’s love and goodness you avoid the medically proven ill affects produced by a belief that God is trying to punish you instead of bless you. “Scientists at the University of Missouri discovered in 2015 that patients who feel they are cursed with bad karma, or that God is punishing them, experience more pain and worse physical and mental health than other patients.”[1]

On the flip side, belief in a good loving God, who blesses us and doesn’t curse us, forms the basis for a life lived with gratitude. Gratitude has been scientifically linked to better self care ( journal called Personality and Individual Differences), it can help you sleep better (according to research in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research), it improves will power and patience, and according to Susan Pierce Thompson, a cognitive scientist, gratitude can ease depressions.” Thompson also says that if there were a drug that could achieve the results that gratitude could, however patented that drug would be extremely rich.[2]

So lets be grateful today. God is good, his love endures forever… let that sink in and be the basis of a life rooted in gratitude and saturated in good health.

Gratitude is the right attitude in every day life in all of our relationships. It is especially important in our relationship with our Abba Father who loves us so very much. Psalm 103 has got our attention this week. The psalmist points to so many things to be grateful to God for. He redeemed my life from destruction, He crowns my life with lovingkindness and tender mercies, he heals all my diseases, and my youth is renewed like the eagles (wow) to name just a few.
