Leviticus 9:24“Fire came out from the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar; and when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.”
Leviticus 6:13“Remember, the fire must be kept burning on the altar at all times. It must never go out.”

Leviticus 16:1 “The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of Aaron’s two sons, who died after they entered the Lord’s presence and burned the wrong kind of fire before him.”
They thought they could operate in their calling with their own fire — strength, ability, talent.

Romans 8:13-14 (NKJV)“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”
1 Thessalonians 5:19  “Do not quench the Spirit.”

Day Of Atonement — Yom Kippur Leviticus 16:2-34‘On that day offerings of purification will be made for you, and you will be purified in the Lord’s presence from all your sins … day of complete rest for you, and you must deny yourselves …
“…This is a permanent law for you, to purify the people of Israel from their sins, making them right with the Lord once each year.’ Moses followed all these instructions exactly as the Lord had commanded him.”

Passover:Every family participates. — Lamb for every household. — Personal forgiveness, deliverance.
Repeat every year. — Temporary limited results. — Foreshadows Jesus.

Atonement:  Only High Priest is working. — All others observe in rest. — Different sacrifice – bull and goats.
Corporate purification and union. — Repeat every year.— Temporary limited results.—  Foreshadows Jesus.

ATONEMENT (DEFINITION) :— reconciliation, agreement; satisfaction or reparation for a wrong or injury; amends.
Theology —the doctrine concerning the reconciliation of God and humankind, especially as accomplished through the life, suffering, and death of Christ.

1. The Work Of The Priest
Humbled in simple garments           Jesus — God becomes flesh
He works alone, heavy lifting!!!       Jesus — Went to cross alone
He is a representative                        Jesus — Substitutionary ministry
He returns in glorious garments     Jesus — Ascends Glory

2.The Posture Of The People    Complete Rest. —  Deny yourself.  —  Pay attention.
Ephesians 2:8“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,”

3. The Two Goats   A. The Sacrificed Goat   Represents Propitiation.
1 John 2:2“And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.”
Propitiate:— to appease and reconcile

In Propitiation Jesus Became Sin
1 Corinthians 5:21“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”    Jesus became every sin, past present and future, to the fullest degree.

For Our Propitiation God Condemned Sin In Jesus
Romans 8:3“For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemnedsin in the flesh,”(KATAKRINO)  Catastrophe

The Godhead Was Involved In The Act Of Propitiation
2 Corinthians 5:19“that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.”
God’s Wrath Poured On Sin Secures Our Propitiation
Romans 5:9“Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wraththrough Him.”

Hebrews 2:14“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,”

1 Corinthians 15:57“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victorythrough our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The atonement has achieved victory for us … over sin, death and the devil!!!

B. The Scapegoat  Represents Expiation  The removal of sin and restored union with God. Deals with GUILT!
Psalm 103:12   “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”

Isaiah 43:25“I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.”
Micah 7:19 “He will again have compassion on us, And will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins Into the depths of the sea.”

Proverbs 14:9 (NLT) “Fools make fun of guilt, but the godly acknowledge it and seek reconciliation.”
Guilt is anger directed at ourselves at what we did or did not do.   Guilt is like psychological pain GET HELP!

“He that is conscious of guilt cannot bear the innocence of others: So they will try to reduce all others to their own level. Guilt upon the conscience, like rust upon iron, both defiles and consumes it, gnawing and creeping into it, as that does which at last eats out the very heart and substance of the metal.”    Bishop Robert South

Hebrews 9:14“…how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your consciencefrom dead works to serve the living God?”

Isaiah 53:6b-7“And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.”    JESUS WAS THE  COSMIC SCAPEGOAT …  HE TOOK IT ALL ON HIMSELF …

PICTURE OF SCAPEGOAT …. A Good Scapegoat Is Nearly As Welcome  As A Solution To The Problem

Our culture today in addicted to scapegoating!!!
Some have been conditioned to blame themselves for everything.   FAMILIES — Black Sheep
Some are experts blaming others for everything and anything else.

Luke 8:29“For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.”
People were upset when he wasted free … hey who took away our blame factor ,,, we have peace when we find something outside of our selves to blame!!!!

Matthew 5:11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.”    Highest place in Christ … embrace his roll of intensification with broken and outcast

Leviticus 19:33-34  “Do not take advantage of foreigners who live among you in your land. Treat them like native-born Israelites, and love them as you love yourself. Remember that you were once foreigners living in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”

Romans 4:25 (NLT) “He was handed over to die (Propitiation)because of our sins, and he was raised to life  (Expiation)to make us right with God.” “…who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.”  (NRSV)
