John 19:30 “He said, ‘It is finished!’ And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”
Matthew 27:50-51 “And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom;…”
Torn relationship between God and man.
Simply put: Sin is the problem. Jesus is the solution.
What is sin?
John Piper “Sinning is any feeling or thought or speech or action that comes from a heart that does not treasure God over all other things. A heart that prefers anything above God, a heart that does not treasure God over all other person and all other things.”
Karl Barth – (Christian Dogmatics)
“It is true enough that unbelief is the sin, the original form and source of all sins, and in the last analysis the only sin because it is the sin which produces and embraces all other sins.”
Religion teaches sin management.
Paul was awesome law keeper and yet called himself the greatest of sinners.
Philippians 3:5-6 “… concerning the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.”
What it is not:
1. It is not an invisible coating on things that we must avoid or we will become contaminated.
Colossians 2:20-23 “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? … they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.”
2. Simply breaking commands of God.
Luke 6:9 “Then Jesus said to them, ‘I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy?’”
Mark 2:27 “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.”
Colossians 2:13-14 “And you, being dead in your trespasses … He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”
Romans 3:21-23 “But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,…”
Paul talks about sin 48x’s in the book of Romans. Noun 46x’s and Verb 2x’s
Hamartano (verb) to be without a share in, to miss the mark to err, be mistaken.
Harmatia (noun) equivalent to 264 to be without a share in, to miss the mark to err, be mistaken.
What mark do we fall short of? “The Glory of God,”
Glory dóksa :— from dokeō, exercising personal opinion which determines value. that something has inherent, intrinsic worth. We sin when we do not embrace God’s value.
Romans 1:18-19 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.”
Ungodliness (asebeia):— want of reverence towards God, the opposite of the word for revere or adore, disregard for God’s person.
Ungodliness is not bad behavior. Ungodliness is unbelief in the grace of a good God. It’s saying, “God, who needs you? I’m fine without you.”
Romans 5:19 “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.”
Genesis 3 “‘(Devil) For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,… hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God … God called to Adam and said to him, ‘Where are you?’”
Man became separate from God. An INDIVIDUAL.
Man now had the capacity to make his own determination of what was right and wrong.
Man developed his own systems of scales and balance. He became the system maker and judge.
Adam lost sight of his own value. When he ate he fell short.
Darkness descended on His mind and he ran and his from God.
But God came looking for Him. To restore His value.
Genesis 5:3 “And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.”
The ministry of the law led to the ministry of Christ.
The law imputed sin to all of mankind from Adam to the very last person ever born on earth.
It was nailed to the cross, making way for the ministry of Life – Jesus Christ Himself.
Galatians 3:22 “But the Scripture (LAW) has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.”
Romans 5:13 “For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.”
Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
Question: Why do you have a hard time trusting God? Is He not trustworthy?
Sin is SELFISHNESS! Answer this question. Are you following Jesus?
1 Timothy 1:15-16 “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.”
Matthew 11:28 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Romans 5:17 “For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.”
Hebrews 9:26 “But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.” There only two types of people: 1. In Christ 2. In Adam
