MOVE Series# 10, The Gospel of Jesus Christ
By: Zach Sloane

Recap: Series Recap – Move.

We are moving. Jesus was moving on mission and with purpose, culminating at the cross. That was not the end of the story. God had something else in mind, even death itself could not stop him as he moved.

Intro:
Mark 1:1
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”

By the time we get to the last chapter, the full Gospel has been revealed, and the disciples are now given charge over this good news.

Mark 16:15
…Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.“

Mark 16:20
“And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.”

In Mark 16 we have the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and with it the glorious announcement of the Good News of the Kingdom, Jesus is Lord, even over death.

Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”

1 Corinthians 15:1-5
“Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand… For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures and that He was seen by …”

  1. Christ Died for our Sins

Romans 3:23
For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.”
Glory = Doxa: opinion (always good in NT), praise, honor, glorydóksa (from dokeō, “exercising personal opinion which determines value”)

Sin is when you fail to have the right view, opinion, estimation of God. It is not a list of bad things you do. Wrong or no view of God, leads to bad actions.

Jesus became one us, and by entering into our cursed broken, sick condition, by entering into our death, he absorbed into his experience, life, into his own body all the consequences of sin that could ever possibly be unleashed, and he experienced it all. He did it for every one of us, for all time and eternity, and all at once.

2 Corinthians 5:21
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

That’s what it means to says that he was crucified for our sins.

Isaiah 53:6
“…the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

Not only this, but our broken selves were crucified with him as well .

Romans 6:6
“knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.”

  1. He was buried!

Mark 16:2-3
“…they were on their way to the tomb  and they asked each other, Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

Luke 24:5-6
Why do you seek the living among the dead?

Romans 6:4
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

  1. He Rose Again

Mark 16:6
“…You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here…”

When we talk about resurrection we are not talking about a second chance or hopeful new beginning or a do-over. We are talking about the literal power of God that took a dead body and raised it back to life as something much more glorious than it ever was before.

Luke 24:37-42
“They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost… Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

One day we too will have new bodies. But before that, we have to see that we have been raised up with him.

Ephesians 2:6
And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus…”

This already happened to you.

John 11:25-26
Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

But people die every day, how can you say we will never die? You never will, but you will upgrade your body.

1 Corinthians 15:42-44
“The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.”

Your body is destined to die! But, you will not, and you will trade this body of flesh and corruption for glory and incorruptibility.

In the mean time, we have a first-fruits deposit on the promise of a new body. While we await this time, the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead, who dwells in us, he will give life to this mortal body.

The fear of death is meant to be broken off of us. In this way, more so than any other way are we called to be his witnesses. Witnesses to the resurrection.

Hebrews 2:14-15
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

The whole world is in bondage to death, nature is bound to decay ( see Rom 8)

Ephesians 1:9-10
“…that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him.”

This is the hope of the whole world and the message we have for all of creation, not just for our souls. The resurrection, and the good news that Jesus is Lord over death and decay, sin and sickness, corruption and evil is for all creation, EVERY CREATURE.

1 Corinthians 5:16-19
“16 Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.”

  1. He was seen!

This went public. He is still seen in and through us.

2 Timothy 1:10
“…Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”

Acts 1:22
“…one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

Concluding thoughts on MOVE and Resurrection!

Acts 4:33
And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.”

The resurrection brings tangible power and other world results in to our lives and our outcomes.

Ephesians 1:19-21
“…and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality  and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.”

Hebrews 7:16-17
16 one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life.

The qualification, power and basis for our partnership with Jesus as kings and priests, is not found in any legal requirement or our natural birth, gifts or abilities, but like Melchizedek, in our share in his indestructible life.

2 Corinthians 13:4
For though He was crucified in weakness, yet He lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God toward you.

We are to possess this same consciousness of eternal indestructible life:

Revelation 1:18
I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.

Let’s MOVE. Let’s take this gospel out there, and as it says in the last verse of Mark, this is what we have to look forward to if we just get out there and MOVE!

Mark 16:20
Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
