Jesus Favourite House:
Luke 10:38“Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house.”
JESUS WAS HIGHLY RELATIONAL — COMMUNITY IS THE MEDIUM AND THE MESSAGE!!!
John 11:3 “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
Culture Of Love
John 13:34“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”
Love:– Sacrificially ascribing infinite worth to another. Receive Love to Give love!!!
Culture Of Formation
Mark 1:17“Then Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.’”
Being a follower of Jesus looks like something. An authentic expression of being with Jesus
Culture Of Acceptance
Romans 15:7 “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.”
Belong – Believe – Behave NOT Behave – Believe – Belong
Culture Of Authenticity— genuine / real / Integrity
Luke 10:38-42
Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’feet and heard His word. (Jesus Is Teaching)40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”41 And Jesus[l] answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thingis needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 9:51“Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem,”
Jesus had turned towards His full-on confrontation with the kingdom of darkness.
Hebrews 11:5-6“My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes (“scourgeth”KJV)each one he acceptsas his child.”
WHAT IS THIS LITTLE LETTER IN MY TRANSLATION FOR????
Proverbs 3:11-12
“My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.”
How does that get messed up in translation?
Andrew Farleyis and on p.234ff of his book God Without Religion a Hebrew word that can be translated “to scourge” can also be translated “to inquire into.” In other words, God doesn’t scourge us, rather:
“God deeply inquires into our lives as he disciplines us, so that we can experience a harvest of righteousness and peace.” (Heb. 12:6, Farley’s paraphrase)
++++++++++++++++++++++(“Scourges” Found 7xs in the bible. In every verse apart from Hebrews 12:6 it is associated with unjust punishment inflicted by the unjust upon the just) ++++++++++++++++++++++
Romans 2:4 (NKJV)“Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”
Romans 2:4 (NLT)“Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intendedto turn you from your sin?”
Missing the mark … not having that high value of yourself and of God
Romans 2:4 (The Message) “God is kind, but he’s not soft. In kindness he takes usfirmly by the handand leads us into a radical life-change.”
Titus 2:11-12
“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching usthat, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,…”
Jesus Is Grace! Grace Transforms!
What Happens When We Try To Deal With Life On Our Own?
1. Return to a defaultfor control
2. Distanceyourself from Jesus
3.Fracturecore relationships
4. You should expect Jesus to take you firmly by the handlead you to a radical life-change
A culture of authenticity won’t let you frame your destiny with anything other than the radical life-changing presence of Jesus.
Only what is initiated by your time at His feet has any eternal significance.
John 12:1-8
Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. 2 There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. 3 Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. 4 But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it. 7 But Jesus said, “Let her alone; she has kept[c] this for the day of My burial. 8 For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”
