Last Supper #3 The Vine And Branches
By: Pastor Karl Thomas
A very important supper to Jesus. Holy Spirit made sure that this dinner were secured in Scriptures.
Jesus last chance to communicate before He laid His life down.
Luke 22:15
“Then He said to them, ‘With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;’”
First lesson that must be embraced for a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit. They key to great personal and corporate revival: “…love one another; as I have loved you …” It looks like: A Towel “He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.”
A mark of spiritual maturity is when a Christian takes off the bib and puts on the apron.
Mark 10:45
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
John 14:1-3,23 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; (DWELLINGS) if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
23Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home (DWELLING) with him.
John 14:6
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’”
John 15:9,11,18,26 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.”
“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.”
“If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.”
“But when the Helper comes, from the Father, …He will testify of Me.”
John 15:1-8, 16-17
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away;[a] and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. (I’m going to be my own vine … thanks anyway but I’m going to do this myself) 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another.
“takes away” (Airo) :— to raise up, elevate, lift up, to raise from the ground, take up,to raise upwards, elevate, to take upon one’s self and carry what has been raised up… “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He lifts from dirt …” Elevates, turns your face to Him.
Mark 2:11 “I say to you, arise, take up (Airo) your bed, and go to your house.”
When you have made a decision to accept Him you abide in Him. If you are fruitful He will make you more fruitful. If you are fruitless He will LIFT YOU UP … make you fruitful.
John 15:2 “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away;”
John 2:8 “And He said to them, ‘Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.’ And they took it.”
phero:—to carry some burden, to be conveyed or borne, to bring forward in a speech
“Stop struggling. It’s not your job to produce fruit but to bear the fruit that he produces in you.
Be the branch. He is the vine. Quit trying to be a little vine of your own. Jesus does it all. Our part is to trust him and depend on him for everything. The fact is you are in union, so live in union.”
Paul Ellis “Gospel In Ten Words”
Galatians 5: 19, 22-25
“Now the works of the flesh are evident (obvious), … But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control … If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
(AMP) “…the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes]”
1 John 4:15 “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.”
1 John 3:6
“Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.”
“To those who are trusting in their own good behaviour this verse declares, ‘Your best is not good enough. God expects sinless perfection.’ Either you must be perfect or you must put your faith in a perfect, representative.” (Ellis)
1 John 3:9 “Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.”
Our imperfections are hidden in His perfection …we carry His sinless DNA. Jesus didn’t sin and He won’t ever sin.
Christ’s commands cannot be obeyed in our own power. Jesus is not interested in behaviour modification. Fruit produced by the Spirit does not command a performance. Even fleshly goodness is BAD! The word “abide” means “rest” and “surrender,” not “struggle” and “try harder.”
Colossians 2:6 (NKJV)
“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,”
(GNT) “Since you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, live in union with him.”
John 14:1-3,23
“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.
John 15:16
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.”
